A Waikato farmer has been fined $20,000 and his farm manager sentenced to three months community detention for polluting a waterway.

Elliot Kent, who farms at Te Pahu, was fined for allowing effluent to be illegally discharged onto land last October.

The effluent entered the Kaniwhaniwha Stream, which is a popular trout fishing waterway.

Farm manager David Mathias was given three months community detention for unlawful discharge after Hamilton District Court accepted he could not afford a fine.
