Waikato farmers don't want end to drought relief measures

6:29 pm on 29 January 2011

Waikato farmers don't want Government drought support measures removed, even though recent rain has restored soil moisture levels to above average.

The regional drought committee says some farmers will still need ongoing support due to the effects of drought and the risk remains that soil moisture levels could plummet again if there was an extended period of dry weather.

The committee is asking the Government to maintain the availability of rural assistance payments to qualifying farmers in the region.

The Ministry of Agriculture will review the status of Waikato's drought declaration, and that of other North Island regions, early next week.

Meanwhile, severe rain and wind warnings have been issued for parts of Waikato and Northland.

Farmers are advised to move stock to higher ground, and monitor river levels.
