The Sydney Football Club have sacked former Phoenix goalkeeper Liam Reddy after he got drunk on a flight to Wellington ahead of the club's recent A-League elimination final against the Phoenix.

Reddy, who had been demoted late in the season to back-up goalkeeper, was immediately stood down from the match and sent home by Sydney officials.

Reddy had one year remaining on his contract.

The players association, Professional Footballers Australia, of which Reddy is an executive member, says it will provide legal advice to the player.

The association's Chief Executive, Brendan Schwab says Reddy regrets his actions.
