Updated at 12:23 pm on 4 May 2012

The world champion Lisa Carrington heads the New Zealand Olympic canoe sprint team which was named today for the London Games.

Carrington's event, the K1 200, will be on the Olympic programme for the first time.

The team of five includes Athens Olympic silver medallist Ben Fouhy in the K1 1000, four time Olympian Steven Ferguson and Darryl Fitzgerald in the men's K2 1000 and Erin Taylor, who'll team up with Carrington in the women's K2 500.

The canoeists leave on Tuesday to compete at two World Cup events in Poland and Germany and will remain in Europe through to the Games.

The selection announcement brings the New Zealand Olympic team to 85, with a further 100 athletes expected to be named over the coming three months.
