Australia's most successful female swimmer, breaststroker Leisel Jones has confirmed her retirement.

Australian swimming's first four-time Olympian has announced the end of a 13-year international career in which she won nine Olympic medals including three gold, equalling Ian Thorpe's record for most medals won by an Australian.

At 15, she became Australian swimming's youngest Olympic medallist by winning two silvers at the Sydney Games.
