Battle brewing for Australian basketball coaching job

1:54 pm on 22 February 2013

There's a battle brewing off court as well as on between the New Zealand Breakers and their Australian basketball arch-rivals the Perth Wildcats.

The Australian head coach role is up for grabs and the two top contenders are Breakers mastermind Andrej Lemanis and Wildcats coach Rob Beveridge.

Australian bookmakers have Lemanis as the narrow favourite for the post, he's been an assistant for four years to Brett Brown at the Boomers. Brown resigned late last year to spend more time with his family.

Lemanis considers the Breakers' back to back titles and his whole backroom staff are big factors in his favouritism for the job.

Lemanis could have to relocate back to his native country to take on the Boomers job, though it may yet remain a part-time role.
