Japan miss chance to clinch World Cup spot

10:57 am on 27 March 2013

Japan have missed the chance to become the first team to qualify for next year's football World Cup after a 2-1 loss at Jordan.

The Japanese dominated possession and created numerous chances but missed a second half penalty which would have given them the point they needed to qualify for Brazil.

Jordan are now second in the group, six points behind Japan.

In the same group Australia and Oman are third equal after the two sides drew 2-2 in Sydney.

The top two from the group qualify for the World Cup.
