Crocs' road win no comfort for Breakers

7:55 am on 19 February 2009

The Townsville Crocodiles are through to the Australian National Basketball League semi finals after beating the Perth Wildcats 103-96 in a heated clash in Perth.

The sudden death quarter final win means the Crocs now face the table-topping South Dragons in a best-of-three semi-finals series, which history suggests they'll lose in Melbourne.

In fact, according to the statistics Townsville have already overachieved - 15 of the 20 sudden death quarter finals played under the current format in five previous seasons have been won by the home team. Not one has ever made it through them to win the championship.

Whether the Breakers can take any cheer from the result - or the stats book - is a moot point.

The upset in Perth will have them wary tonight as they host their first ever home quarter final against Adelaide with the prize for the winner a semi-finals series against the Melbourne Tigers.

From there the statistics make cold comfort for the Auckland side - the first and second ranked teams have ended up playing off in the past four Grand Final series, and 24 of the 30 Championships have been won by the first and second seeded teams.
