Swiss defender forced to defend contempt of court charge

The Swiss defender of sailing's America's Cup is being forced back to court in New York to defend a charge of contempt which carries a possible prison sentence.

The charge relates to Alinghi's yacht club saying the next challenge in multi-hulls could not be held until next May, when an earlier court ruling had specified race dates next February.

Alinghi's arch-rival the San Francisco-based BMW Oracle had filed papers outlining statements from Alinghi about race dates which it claimed breach the court decision.

The Americans won an 18-month-long court battle in which the Swiss were found to have breached cup rules in the way they planned the next regatta, giving BMW Oracle the right to mount a sole challenge in a giant multihull.

The court has told Alinghi's yacht club that potential penalties for contempt could include fines or imprisonment.
