Southland and Tasman win in NPC

6:51 am on 9 August 2009

Southland have moved to the top of the National Provincial rugby championship with a 26-19 win over Otago at Carisbrook in Dunedin.

It is the second week in a row the Stags have beaten a Super 14 franchise base team, following last week's win Waikato.

Make shift first five Robbie Robinson again featured for Southland, kicking 16 points through four penalties and two conversions.

Southland scored two tries to one.

Meanwhile last week's giant killers North Harbour have crashed to a 19-15 loss to minnow Tasman at North Harbour Stadium in Albany.

North Harbour were on a high after beating defending champions Canterbury last week.

Only two booming 50 metre penalty goals by first five Michael Harris gave Harbour some respectability.

Tasman scored two tries to nil - the second coming after the Makos put together a 14-phase build-up.
