6:01 am on 9 September 2009

A dismal batting display has seen the New Zealand cricketers crushed by almost a hundred runs in the opening one dayer against Sri Lanka in Colombo.

Chasing 217 to win on a slow pitch the Black Caps were dismissed for 119, after being 41 for six at one stage with fast bowler Lasith Malinga grabbing three wickets in the space of five balls.

Grant Elliot top scored with 41, Ian Butler, Brendon McCullum and Daniel Vettori the only other batsmen to make double figures.

Malinga finished with career best figures of four for 28 after man-of-the-match Thilan Samaraweera held the home side's innings together with 104, after Sri Lanka had been 69 for five.

Shane Bond marked his return to the one day international arena after a two year absence with three from 43 off ten overs while Darryl Tuffey, who's also back after breaking ties with the rebel ICL took one for 35 off nine overs.

The Black Caps next match is against India on Friday night.
