Celtic lose Scottish Premier League lead

7:19 am on 18 October 2009

Celtic were left to rue a host of missed chances as they lost their lead at the top of the Scottish Football Premier League after being held to a goalless draw by Motherwell at Parkhead.

The Hoops failed to find a way past Motherwell, who defended in numbers and used the pace of their young players to hit Celtic on the break.

Both sides had chances to win the game but it will be Celtic who will be left wondering how they didn't win it with Australian Scott McDonald guilty of missing a golden chance in injury-time when he headed over the bar from a couple of yards out.

Rivals Rangers are now one point clear at the top of the table after they came from behind to win 2-1 away to St Johnstone.

Elsewhere, Dundee United were held to a 1-1 draw with Hamilton, Hibernian stayed third with a 1-0 win over Kilmarnock, Aberdeen and Hearts drew 1-1 while St Mirren won 3-1 away to Falkirk.
