The New Zealand Yacht Alfa Romeo leads the annual race by a few nautical miles from rival maxis four time defending winner Wild Oats and Great Britain's Leopard.
But the 2005 race record of Wild Oats looks under no threat, with the absence of strong favourable nor'easterlies making for relatively slow going.
