Cowboys expecting 'mayhem' on return to Townsville

The North Queensland Cowboys co-captain Matt Scott says it will be "mayhem" when the side return to Townsville with the National Rugby League title in tow.

Half-back and fellow co-captain Johnathan Thurston claimed the final piece of silverware missing from his glittering career after leading the Cowboys to their first NRL title in the club's 21 year history in last night's grand final in Sydney.

In one of the most dramatic finishes ever seen in a title decider, the Cowboys came from four points down with just seconds left on the clock.

Thurston regained his composure after missing an attempted conversion in the last minute of play to kick the winning field goal in extra-time and give the Cowboys a 17-16 victory over Brisbane.

Scott said the celebrations would be something to behold.

"Ah it's going to be mayhem hahahahaha, oh bring it on it's going to be awesome. This region is a very proud rugby league region and you know 20 years in the competition now, we've been close before and had some highs and lows and they've gone through it all with us so to be able to take these rings back and the trophy back will be extremely satisfying."

Thurston has won nine State of Origin titles with Queensland, numerous MVP gongs and a World Cup title but says finally winning an NRL premiership was his number one achievement.

The Broncos had won each of their six previous grand final appearances before last night's loss.

The All Blacks watched the Grand Final huddled around one of the players laptops.

Former NRL star Sonny Bill Williams, who played with Thurston in his early career at the Bulldogs, said the halfback would finish as one of the game's greats, regardless of Sunday night's result.
