Poulter completes rags to riches story

6:53 am on 23 February 2010

The English golfer Ian Poulter, who had boldly predicted he would be the next player to challenge Tiger Woods, is up to 5th in the world rankings after landing the biggest win of his career yesterday in Arizona.

34 year old Poulter's 4 and 2 win over fellow Englishman Paul Casey at the Accenture Matchplay Championship completed a rags-to-riches story for Poulter who turned professional at 18 with a 4-handicap, and no amateur honours.

There are now three Englishmen, including Paul Casey and Lee Westwood, in the world's top six.
