Security has been stepped up in Delhi for the start of the men's World Cup hockey tournament which gets underway tonight.

Amoung the opening day fixtures is the potentially highly charged meeting between hosts India and neighbours Pakistan.

Several players expressed fears about security following a terrorist threat earlier this month... the New Zealander Simon Child decided not to attend the tournament with the rest of the Black Sticks squad.

Reigning World and Olympic champions Germany are the favourites to win their third straight tournament despite going into the event without a number of key players.

Australia will also be contenders.

New Zealand's opening match is against Canada tomorrow night.
