Black Caps win fiery first one dayer in Napier

The Black Caps came out on top in a fiery first one day cricket international against Australia last night in Napier.

Chasing Australia's 275 for 8 the home team reached their target with four balls and two wickets to spare.

Peter Ingram and Brendon McCullum put on 76 for the first wicket, but the run rate slowed and had to be put back on course, and Ross Taylor stood up with a run-a-ball 70 as stand-in captain for Daniel Vettori who pulled out just before the match with a neck strain.

And Vettori's replacement Scott Styris steered the side to victory with an unbeaten 49 off 34 balls, ending the match with a six off Doug Bollinger.

Styris and the Australian pace bowler Mitchell Johnson were involved in a heated exchange late in the match after Styris had dispatched two Johnson deliveries for boundaries.

The Australian left armer was later fined 60 percent of his match fee for what appeared to be a head-butt, and Styris was docked 15 percent of his match fee.

Game two is in Auckland on Saturday.
