Six-times MLB baseball All-Star Nomar Garciaparra has retired after signing a one-day contract with the Boston Red Sox so he could end his career with the team he made his mark with.

The 36-year-old Garciaparra, one of baseball's best shortstops during his prime, played nine of his 14 Major League Baseball seasons with the Red Sox.

Garciaparra, who along with Alex Rodriguez and Derek Jeter formed a Big Three of great hitters at the shortstop position, won two batting titles in Boston before finishing his career with the Cubs, Dodgers and Athletics.

Injuries marred the last few seasons for Garciaparra, who was a first-round pick by Boston in the 1994 draft.

Garciaparra is married to American football star Mia Hamm.
