Kimberley Smith finished ninth in the 10,000 metres as Tirunesh Dibaba of Ethiopia took the first track gold medal of the Beijing Games.
Smith was almost a minute behind Dibaba's Olympic record time.
Dibaba produced a devastating last 300 metres to outkick former compatriot Elvan Abeylegesse, now racing for Turkey, and secure the first part of her unprecedented bid for a long-distance running double on target.
American Shalane Flanagan won a shock bronze medal.
Dibaba says she hasn't decided whether she'll run the 5000 metres yet.
