V8 Supercars will switch from unleaded to CSR Ethanol fuel from next year in a bid to reduce the competition's carbon footprint.
It is believed the ethanol fuel, which is made from molasses, the byproduct of sugar refining, will reduce carbon dioxide emissions by more than 50 per cent in the series.
The introduction of E85, which is a blend of 85 per cent ethanol and 15 per cent unleaded petrol, will also mean more fuel stops are needed making for more strategy.
The move is also an attempt to prove ethanol is a viable alternative for road cars, while V8 Supercar chairman Tony Cochrane estimating it will cost teams almost $10,000 less per car, per year in fuel.
Leading V8 Supercar outfits Triple Eight Racing and Stone Brothers Racing have tested the ethanol fuel and found only minimal modifications were required to the cars to achieve the same levels of horsepower and torque.
