Wins for the Steamers and the Taniwha

Bay of Plenty have beaten Counties-Manukau 24-21 in Mt Maunganui to complete round eight of the provincial rugby championship.

Counties looked set to take the victory until Mike Delaney scored the winning try in the last minute.

The Bay leap-frog Counties into eighth place on the table.

Earlier Northland beat Otago 13-8 in their first win at Carisbrook since 1979.

Southland top the standings with 30 points, Auckland and Taranaki have 27, Canterbury 26, Wellington 25, Waikato 22, Northland and Bay of Plenty 21 and Counties Manukau 19.

Next weekend Southland defend the Ranfurly Shield against Auckland and Canterbury host Wellington with entry free to AMI Stadium.
