The Commonwealth Games road cycling silver medallist Hayden Roulston and Greg Henderson, who decided not to go to Delhi, will lead an invitational national team in next month's Tour of Southland.

Although they ride for different teams in Europe the sport's world governing body the UCI allows pro tour riders to race for another team if it's for club or country.

Roulston is a three-time winner of the six-day Tour, which starts on the 1st of November.

BikeNZ has also invited the United States-based Jeremy Vennell to join the team, with young riders Jason Christie, Brett Tivers and Paul Odlin.

BikeNZ's chief executive, Kieran Turner, says it's a credit to the Tour's history and culture that top riders want to come home to complete after a full international season.
