UCI introduces "no needles" policy

5:52 am on 5 May 2011

In its latest attempt to crack down on doping, the International Cycling Union has announced that riders will no longer be allowed needles except for clear medical reasons.

Despite the doping scourge that's badly damaged the sport, needles have been allowed to inject substances such as vitamins and sugar to help with recovery, but now all non-medical injections have been outlawed.

The UCI wants the new rule brought into effect in time for the Giro d'Italia, which starts this weekend.
