Football Ferns lose to Denmark

12:15 pm on 22 June 2011

The New Zealand women's football team have completed their build up for the FIFA World Cup with a close-fought 1-0 loss to world number 13 Denmark in Switzerland.

The Football Ferns started slowly and Nanna Christiansen converted Danish pressure on the half hour with a low drive which scorched past New Zealand goalkeeper Jenny Bindon, who conceded for the first time in over four hours of international football.

New Zealand produced several chances in a brighter second half but couldn't draw level after failing to apply the finishing touches to some solid build-up play.

The Football Ferns will spend a day recovering before travelling to Germany for their World Cup opener against Japan in Bochum next Tuesday morning.
