Monfils out of US open

The French tennis player Gael Monfils has become the highest mens seed to fall so far at the US Open in New York.

7th seeded Monfils was beaten in the second round in a 5-set thriller by 2003 French Open champion Juan Carlos Ferrero of Spain.

The 31-year-old Ferrero hasn't played much this year, infact he missed all 3 previous grand slam tournaments with numerous injuries, but the former world number showed no signs of fatigue in the match that lasted almost 5 hours.

Meanwhile Roger Federer and Serena Williams both swept into the third round with the same sort of ruthless performances that have made them the king and queen of tennis.

Federer, already a five-time champion at Flushing Meadows, demolished Israel's Dudi Sela in straight sets in just 77 minutes and Serena thrashed Michaella Krajicek of the Netherlands 6-love, 6-1 in less than an hour.
