6:40 pm on 17 October 2011

The crash which killed British racing Indy car driver Dan Wheldon may have been triggered when his teamate New Zealand driver Wade Cunningham made contact with another driver 13 laps into the Las Vegas Indy 300.

A race report on the motor racing website Speed TV says the multi car crash happened after Cunningham's left front wheel appeared to make contact with the right rear wheel of James Hinchcliffe, sending Cunningham into a spin.

Fifteen of the thirty four cars in the race taken were taken out, among them Wheldon who's vehicle became airborne.

Wheldon was the 2005 Indy Racing League Indycar series champions and two time Indy500 winner and was racing with Cunningham for the Sam Schmidt Motorsports team.

Cunningham has posted a statement on social network site Twitter saying he was unharmed.

Fellow New Zealand driver Scott Dixon who was also competing wasn't involved in the crash.

Before the race the drivers had expressed concern about the number of cars on the small oval speedway.
