Video conferencing wanted for rural councils

7:16 am on 11 September 2008

McKenzie District Council wants local government legislation to be changed to allow councillors living in remote areas to take part in council meetings via telephone or video conference.

Chief executive Glen Innes says some councillors face a 200km one-way trip to attend meetings and bad weather sometimes prevents them travelling at all.

Mr Innes says current local government legislation means councillors cannot vote at a meeting at which they are not present.

But he says the majority of attendees at a recent conference of Local Government New Zealand want that changed.

Local Government New Zealand is now lobbying the Government to investigate a law change.
