Imported lollies being tested

4:12 pm on 23 September 2008

The Food Safety Authority says it should know on Tuesday afternoon whether an imported brand of milk-based lollies are contaminated with melamine.

White Rabbit Creamy Candy, a sweet sold in New Zealand, has tested positive for the chemical in Singapore.

Authority officials are checking Chinese supermarkets to find products which may be at risk of contamination and the agency says this product was not one it initially picked up.

Deputy chief executive Sandra Daly says the agency has no plans to recall the lollies until testing is done.

She says the authority does not know at this stage whether they are safe.

But she says the authority does not think there is a high risk of the lollies containing melamine.
