Application to import genetically modified vaccine

4:10 pm on 23 September 2008

An application to import a vaccine containing live genetically modified organisms will be heard next month.

The application was made by the New Zealand Racing Board and the Equine Health Association which believe equine flu would cause devastation to horses.

The Environmental Risk Management Authority on Tuesday published a report that will help it decide whether the vaccine can be allowed.

It says that the Proteqflu and Proteqflu Te vaccines meet minimum standards and the positive effects of the organisms outweigh any adverse effects.

But the authority says the report is only part of the information it will consider and it will hear from both the applicant and public submissions early next month.

The application to import live genetically modified organisms is the first to be made in New Zealand.
