One of New Zealand's highest awards for bravery has been presented to an Auckland man who tried to save a woman from being stabbed to death.

The Governor-General presented Taufui Aevalu Paea with the New Zealand Bravery Star at Government House in Auckland on Friday.

In 2004, Mr Paea's neighbour was attacked by her estranged husband. She managed to make her way to Mr Paea's home, while being chased and stabbed.

Mr Paea, then aged 67, confronted the attacker and pulled him off the woman, but suffered a deep wound to his face.

Despite this, he managed to make sure police were alerted and got his own wife and grandchildren from the house.

The citation for the award says Mr Paea showed exceptional bravery, putting his life at risk by tackling the armed attacker, returning to save his family and trying to give the victim more help before she died.

He is one of only nine New Zealanders to receive the Bravery Star since it was created in 1999.
