Premier offers co-operation over anti-gang laws

5:06 pm on 30 September 2008

South Australian Premier Mike Rann has invited New Zealand police to work with the state's law enforcement officers on legislation to fight gang activity.

The Government is considering the introduction of a law similar to that in South Australia, which bans gang members associating with each other.

Mr Rann has invited New Zealand police and Crown Law Office representatives to visit the state and see how the legislation is working.

He says gangs in South Australia hired the best lawyers to fight the legislation, and now it is in place, they are "screaming blue murder" and running scared.

Mr Rann says the South Australian government has learned from New Zealand's gang experience, and will happily discuss the legislation's success with New Zealand officials.
