A New Zealander has been extradited to Brisbane over an alleged sexual assault.

The 33-year-old man, brought back by a Queensland detective on Friday, has been charged over an alleged assault of an 18-year-old woman at Northgate Railway Station, in Brisbane's north, in November 2006.

Due to the timing, it was initially investigated under Operation Echo Shine which looked into more than 40 attacks on women on Brisbane bikeways from 2006 to 2007.

But police have discounted a connection to the bikeway assaults.

"During the course of Operation Echo Shine, police examined the modus operandi of all sexual offences committed across all of north Brisbane in order to identify any links to the operation," Metropolitan North Region Assistant Commissioner Peter Barron said.

"One of the matters reported to police was the sexual assault of a woman in November 2006 at a north Brisbane railway station.

"The alleged offender for this sexual assault was identified as the New Zealand resident...(but) prior to being identified as the person alleged to be responsible for this assault, the person returned to New Zealand."

The New Zealand resident was expected to appear in Brisbane Magistrates Court on Saturday.
