Court ruling expected on Fiji coup

The High Court in Fiji is due to deliver its verdict on Thursday on a challenge to the legitimacy of the coup in December 2006 by Commodore Frank Bainimarama.

Former prime minister Laisenia Qarase has challenged the legality of the interim government.

Commodore Bainimarama subsequently appointed himself prime minister He has been accused of a number of human rights abuses since taking power and a crackdown on free speech.

The Australian newspaper quotes sources in Fiji as saying the High Court is expected to vote two to one in favour of Commodore Bainimarama.
