US technology company Intel has posted a 12% rise in third-quarter profit due to rising demand for laptop computers.

Intel made a profit of $US2 billion in the three months to September, as it reassured investors worried that the crisis among financial firms would curb demand for computers.

Revenue rose over 1% to $US10.2 billion.

Intel also says sales may rise in the current quarter due to stronger demand for laptops, though it pointed out that uncertainty about the economy and credit may prompt people and companies to delay purchases.
