National pledges more frontline police

The National Party says it would put about 200 more police officers on the street than Labour - a significant number of those would be sent to South Auckland.

Party leader John Key says National wants to see one frontline officer for every 500 people - the current ratio is one to 520.

He says National would ensure that the remainder of the extra 1000 police staff being recruited under Labour would be frontline staff only.

He says the party would recruit an extra 200, with many of the extra officers going to the Counties-Manukau District.

Mr Key says not only would that result in more people being arrested for criminal activity, but more police on the street would provide a visible deterrent.
