Nia Glassie trial begins

The High Court trial of five people charged over the killing of three-year-old Nia Glassie is under way in Rotorua.

Brothers Michael and Wiremu Curtis are accused of the murder of Nia last July.

Michael Pearson, Orewa Kemp and Nia's mother, Lisa Kuka, are charged with manslaughter.

The indictment also lists three charges of wilful ill treatment and 20 of assault.

Ms Kemp has pleaded guilty to three assault charges related to throwing shoes at Nia and two other children

Mr Curtis has pleaded guilty to two representative assault charged related to performing wrestling moves on two other children.

A jury is being empanelled on Monday and the trial is set down for four weeks.
