Taranaki Regional Council is proposing limits be placed on coastal development to help preserve famous surf spots.

Eighty-one surf breaks have been identified as being worthy of protection and could be included in a regional policy statement.

Developments that could pose a threat include jetties, marinas, sea walls and applications to remove sand from the seabed.
