The leader of Canada's official opposition Liberals, Stephane Dion, is to resign after a big election loss last week.
Mr Dion said on Monday he would stay on until a new leader can be chosen at a convention, which is likely to be held in the first half of next year.
The party won only 76 of Parliament's 308 seats last Tuesday - a drop of 19 from the January 2006 election.
Its share of the vote was 26.2% - the lowest level for the Liberals since 1867.
The former professor of politics won the Liberal leadership in late 2006, due to a split in support between the two front-runners. He is a French speaker who has trouble making himself understood in English.
