Police say the body recovered near Arthur's Pass on Sunday afternoon is that of a local man who had been on a climbing trip.
Noel Clyde Oien left for the trip on Mount Philistine on Thursday 23 October and was reported missing on Sunday morning after failing to return.
His body was located on Sunday afternoon.
Police say it appears he had fallen down a 200 metre drop.
Mr Oien was the manager of the Arthur's Pass Outdoor Education facility and had lived in the area for two years.
