Police in Napier are investigating a fatal collision between a car and a train.

Police say the speeding car hit the back carriage of the train about 11.30am on Friday, killing the male driver. No one else was in the vehicle.

There were no warning lights at the intersection, but there was a give way sign and a person controlling traffic.

The driver of the car, a Pakeha man in his 20s, drove past a queue of cars waiting to cross the intersection before crashing into the train, police say.
