Biggest supermarket won't sell fireworks

New Zealand's biggest supermarket will not sell fireworks this year, in a bid to be socially responsible.

Progressive Enterprises owns Countdown, Woolworths and Foodtown and says the risk of fireworks outweigh the benefits.

Each year, the debate over the sale of fireworks reignites, as pets and people suffer burns and injuries.

Progressive Enterprises says the company can no longer support something which could result in the injury of a customer, and despite fireworks being a million-dollar business, it is refusing to sell them.

However, Foodstuffs and The Warehouse are not following suit.

The Warehouse's general manager of marketing, Stuart Yarston, says it is up to the Government to decide whether fireworks should be legal - not retailers.

Mr Yarston believes Progressive Enterprises is no longer selling the fireworks because their supermarkets were unable to compete with the market leaders.
