Wellington Regional Council is to extend an order for new train units.
Under a new arrangement, the council will buy three more, two-car electric units, bringing the total order to 96 units.
Wellington Regional Council chair Fran Wilde says the opportunity to buy more was included in the contract, which was signed last November.
She says the new units will help cater for a growth in rail patronage, that has been evident throughout this year and is expected to continue.
The new trains are scheduled to begin to arrive in 2010.
