Police in Lower Hutt are searching for a man wanted on firearm offences, and are warning he is considered dangerous.

They say Matthew Kidman is wanted in connection with firearm offences that happened on Tuesday afternoon.

Detective Sergeant Mike Sears says the man, who is just under 1.9m tall and thinly built, has a number of convictions for violence and is on bail for other firearm offences.

He says associates helping the man evade police can expect to be arrested and charged.

A hunt involving the Armed Offenders Squad was launched after residents in the suburb of Naenae saw a man and woman in a car, with a gun and a girl, aged 18 months.

The woman was later apprehended and the child was taken into care, but the man could not be found.

A firearm and jacket were found in Taita Cemetery.
