Auckland boaties warned not to launch old flares during fireworks

4:42 pm on 8 November 2008

The Auckland Coastguard is warning boaties not to use a fireworks display over Auckland Harbour tonight as an excuse to launch expired flares.

Auckland-based millionaire Barry Colman is putting on the city's biggest fireworks show over the outer harbour to mark the end of his Glendowie beachside wedding celebrations.

Mr Colman has asked boaties to moor offshore to see the display and to make voluntary donations to the Auckland Coastguard, whose vessels will be patrolling the area.

Coastguard regional duty officer Katherine Andrews says people should not use the opportunity to set off expired flares.

She says the Coastguard also recommends people not consume alcohol while boating.
