A sales manager for a specialist tree nursery has been named as the Young Horticulturist of the Year.

Jason Greene, 25, who works at Rainbow Trees in South Auckland, competed against seven others from various sectors of the horticulture industry.

The competition acknowledges the country's most talented horticulturists under the age of 30. It involves a series of regional and sector competitions held throughout the country during the year.

Second place winner was Jim Smith, a technical manager for Satara packhouses and orchards in the Tauranga region.

The third place was awarded to Toby Potter, from Te Puke, who represented the vegetable sector.
