Extent of organised crime "shocking" - Police Assn

The Police Association says the incoming National Government would be shocked if it knew the extent of organised crime in New Zealand.

Prime Minister-elect John Key has pledged to remove the right of worst repeat violent offenders to be freed on parole, to make bail laws tougher and to clamp down on gangs and drugs.

Police Association president Greg O'Connor, says most officers will be happy that law and order is high on National's agenda.

But, he says its proposed changes to bail and parole are peripheral to the issues of organised crime and methamphetamine distribution.
