Private sector involvement tipped in ACC

The Government has hinted at the prospect of private sector involvement in accident compensation.

Accident Compensation Minister Nick Smith says New Zealand's accident rate is high by international comparison.

He told Morning Report on Wednesday that work needs to be done to offer incentives to employers to reduce workplace accidents.

For that reason, he said National will investigate the private sector having a role in ACC.

Dr Smith said the new Government is just investigating the possibility at this stage.

He also pledged to follow through with the Emissions Trading Scheme and simplify the Resource Management Act, under his roles of Minister for the Environment and Minister for Climate Change.
