West Coast cave closure angers tourism company

A tourism company on the West Coast is angry over announcements a caving attraction will be closed down.

Solid Energy is notifying the public that access to the Cavern Creek Cave or "Dragon Cave" will close in December as nearby underground mining has increased the likelihood of instability.

The Wild West Adventure Company, which uses the cave, says the newspaper notices are badly affecting business because the trade name "Dragon's Cave" refers to several caving sites, not just the Cavern Creek Cave.

Solid Energy says it has a coal mining licence for the site and the cave has to close for safety reasons.

It says the tourism operator has known about the likely closure since 1993 and Solid Energy used the term "Dragon Cave" so people know exactly which cave is being closed.
