Asia-Pacific markets continue to climb

Sharemarkets in the Asia-Pacific region continued to climb on Thursday, following a strong result from Wall Street.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed up 247.14 points, or 2.91%, to 8,726.61, while a rare four day gain from the Standard & Poor's 500 index boosted markets. The index was 30.29 points higher, or 3.53%, to 887.68.

In New Zealand, the NZX 50 was 30 points, or 1.1%, higher at the close to 2670 on turnover of $71 million.

Telecom rose 2 cents to $2.38, Contact Energy was up 6c to $6.80, while Fletcher Building gained 13 to $5.70. The Warehouse was up 2c to $3.52 and Mainfreight rose 28c to $4.55.

The Australian share market closed in positive territory with the big miners leading the bourse higher after continued gains on Wall Street.

The S&P/ASX200 index was up 48 points, or 1.36%, at 3588, at the close, while the All Ordinaries had gained 48.6 points, or 1.4%, at 3528.2.

Japan's Nikkei stock index closed 1.95% higher on Thursday, lifted by the Wall Street result and continued efforts by countries to prevent a deep global recession.

The Nikkei rose 160.17 points to 8,373.39, mirroring sharp gains across Asia after China announced its biggest interest rate cut in a decade to tackle the economic slowdown.

US markets are closed for Thanksgiving on Thursday.
