Fijian soldier faces to appear on murder charge

9:56 pm on 28 November 2008

A warrant has been ordered for the arrest of a Fijian soldier who failed to attend court to answer a murder charge.

Corporal Maika Vuniwawa's case was to be heard at the High Court in Suva on Friday.

State lawyer Rosemary Drau sought a bench warrant for his arrest when he did not show up.

The victim, Nimilote Verebasaga, died at the Queen Elizabeth Barracks hospital in January 2007 while in the custody of soldiers.

He was one of three civilians to die in the custody of the security forces soon after the military regime took control of the country nearly two years ago.

The case has been adjourned until 16 January.
